The learning experiences that are provided to children of early childhood years are collectively known as early childhood years. The needs of the child in the four areas of development namely the physical, social, emotional and intellectual areas increase during the preschool years. The home becomes inadequate to meet these growths. The early childhood years tare the foundation for later personality development. The great psycho analyst Sigmund Freud said that the early childhood experiences would have a long lasting influence on adult personality.

When a child reaches school age, namely six years he is admitted to the primary school. Going to the primary school for the first time is usually painful experience for children because of the sudden change in the social atmosphere. The child who has attended a preschool finds those transition easier than a child who has not attended a preschool. He may not have adjustment problems.

Another reason why children have adjustment problem is that they find it difficult to learn 3Rs, that is reading, writing and arithmetic in the first grade without earlier preparation. The child finds difficult to learn these tasks simultaneously. Children attending a preschool get prepared for primary school. They are also equipped with concepts necessary for school learning.
