Archive for the ‘Problems of pregnancy’ Category

One of the serious problems affecting maternal and childbirth is the high incidence of maternal and infant mortality. The maternal mortality by puerperal causes is due to the complication of pregnancy such as toxaema of pregnancy, premature separation of placenta leads to death of mother. Standard of living of a country is decided by studying maternal mortality rate and infant mortality rate.

The death due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth is the direct cause of maternal death. The toxaema of pregnancy, bleeding, sepsis, anesthesia, shocks and accident come under this category. Death due to previously existing diseases, which are aggravated by pregnancy, is the indirect causes. Cardiac disease, renal, hepatic, metabolic, infectious diseases like tuberculosis come under this category. Poverty, superstitious belief, malnutrition, family size, age of the mother, unhygienic, sanitary condition, delivery by untrained people are the social causes for maternal and infant mortality.

These should be prevented by some preventive measures. Direct causes must be diagnosed and treated at the right time. The age of the mother should b between 20 to 35 years at the time of pregnancy. Proper pre natal care should be given. Health education must be given to the mother through colleges and social service organizations.

Death of infants during the first 15 days is neo natal mortality. After 15 days is post neo natal mortality. Death of Infants or babies below one year is infant mortality. Infant mortality rate is defines as the number of infant death per 100 live birth in one year.

There are many medical causes for  infant mortality which includes premature babies, that is babies born before 28th weeks of pregnancy, birth injuries during the time of delivery, difficult labor, congenital anomalies, conditions of placenta and cord, unhygienic feeding of the baby, respiratory infections, communicable diseases, malnutrition, and accidents.

This is highly preventable by following some preventive measures. Frequent delivery must be avoided there should be at least 3 years of space between each child. Delivery must be handled by trained people and it should be taking place in a hygienic condition. Home delivery should be avoided. Proper prenatal and post natal care should be given. Breast feeding must be given for one year. Nutritious supplementary foods should be given after six months. All mothers should aware of some first aid to save the baby in times of emergency.

Baby should be kept clean place to avoid infections. Proper vaccination schedule should be followed to prevent the baby from fatal diseases. Baby should be handled only by mother to avoid infections from other people.
