In males, the testes grow rapidly during the first year of puberty. Shortly after that, testes begin to develop and the penis starts to grow in length and the seminal ducts and the prostate glands enlarge. In females, uterus, fallopian tubes and vagina grow rapidly during the period of puberty. The ovaries starts producing ova and started secreting the hormones needed for pregnancy, menstruation and the development of secondary sexual characteristics.

The major secondary sexual characteristics are breast development in girls, body hair, voice changes in boys etc. pubic hair and underarm hair appear both in boys and girls. In boys hair growth also appear in face, arms, legs, shoulders and chest. The skin become coarser and thicker and pore become enlarge. The sebaceous glands in the skin become active and produce an oily secretion and which may result in appearance of pimples in face.

In boys deepening of voice in noticed. In girls, the structure of the body is changed. The size and shape of the hip is observed which becomes wider and rounder to make it ready to deliver the baby. Increase in the size of the breast is noticed. The whole body system is getting ready for pregnancy and childbirth.
