There are two kinds of birth injuries. They are injuries to the brain or nervous system of the baby due to the use of instruments and injury to the brain due to prolonged labor. There are four types of birth viz, normal, breech, transverse and cesarean section. Except in normal birth in all other types of birth instruments are used to aid in delivery. These instruments invariably cause mild and severe damage to the brain.

When birth is long and difficult, the pressure on the head is increased. Because of pressure hemorrhages or bleeding in and around the brain may occur. Premature babies suffer from pressure during birth, which may cause fracture of bones. Also prolonged birth can cause premature separation of placenta, which leads to condition called asphyxia which is suffocation due to lack of oxygen.

Major disabilities like partial hearing, partial seeing, inability to walk, unusual body posture, inability to use different parts of the body and facial spasm may occur due to birth injury, low-grade intelligence due to damage to the brain cells is also common in birth-injured children. In older children and adolescents who have had birth injury general hyper activity, irritability, anxiety, distractibility, speech defects especially stuttering and poor concentration are noticed.

Death of infants during the first 15 days is neo natal mortality. After 15 days is post neo natal mortality. Death of Infants or babies below one year is infant mortality. Infant mortality rate is defines as the number of infant death per 100 live birth in one year.

There are many medical causes for  infant mortality which includes premature babies, that is babies born before 28th weeks of pregnancy, birth injuries during the time of delivery, difficult labor, congenital anomalies, conditions of placenta and cord, unhygienic feeding of the baby, respiratory infections, communicable diseases, malnutrition, and accidents.

This is highly preventable by following some preventive measures. Frequent delivery must be avoided there should be at least 3 years of space between each child. Delivery must be handled by trained people and it should be taking place in a hygienic condition. Home delivery should be avoided. Proper prenatal and post natal care should be given. Breast feeding must be given for one year. Nutritious supplementary foods should be given after six months. All mothers should aware of some first aid to save the baby in times of emergency.

Baby should be kept clean place to avoid infections. Proper vaccination schedule should be followed to prevent the baby from fatal diseases. Baby should be handled only by mother to avoid infections from other people.
